My niece has wanted a 360 for the last year. She earned (or will earn) all A’s this year, so I figured it a great time for a new game system.
Are the new systems from Wal-Mart or Best Buy a second generation unit clear of the defeats? What about the refurbish ones from the game stores like GameStop?
Please no suggestions to buy other systems, she specifical wants the 360 for some of the exclusive 360 games.

The Xbox 360 has not had as many troubles with the newer Xbox 360s sold.
- Microsoft has added a 45MM chipset instead of a 65MM chipset in order to cause less overheating, this occured a few months ago.
- Microsoft has given people a 3 year warranty on the Xbox 360, if it ever Red Rings, call 1-800-my-xbox, and they will replace it for free. Microsoft took a 12 billion dollar hit because they had increased the warranty from 1 year to 2 years, causing them to have to refund the money people had earlier paid Microsoft to fix the 360s that were sent in for repair.
There is always a (pretty good) chance of getting a Red RIng of Death. It’s not preventable or anyhting. It just shows up. MS replaces those though
I have never had problems with my 360….
i had my 360 for almost a year now and nothing bad happned. you cant help prevent rrod by keeping your 360 in a place with lots of space and air, and dont move your 360 around alot. try not to get the refurbished 360 there might be problems with it and you will probably get red rings of death. i think the new systems from walmart and best buy are second generation and less likely to get rrod
no, microsoft installed cooler vents into xbox made in 2006, to prevent the red ring of death.
i myself have an elite so theres even less of a chance of getting it, i recommend the elite
It may be tempting to buy the refurbished one, but Microsoft redesigned the troubled components and any system made after August 2007 has failure rates much closer to that of the PS3 and other competitors. Also, in the event that you get the Red Ring of Death problem, Microsoft will fix it free of charge.
And the Elite does make less heat than the premium, so it may be worth the extra money. Plus, if your niece likes Arcade Games, she could fit a lot on the 120 GB hard drive
The problems have a much smaller chance of happening so on the whole all the 360s on sale now The first generation ones aren’t being stocked) are a lot more reliable. There is still a chance they can break but you are covered for 3 years for free if yours gets the red ring of death
Nah. The kinks have been worked out.
You’d be fine getting a 360 now.
Even if you do get one with hardware problems, microsoft will replace it for free for you.
I wouldn’t suggest getting refurbished, because then you don’t really get a warranty, and its a used system.
It was really a rumor that people and other sites kept revisiting but there really was not a problem. if it was its been fixed.
Here are the odds:
The new 360s have about a 1 out of five percent chance of failing and dying, or about 16%. Those are the ones you buy new.
Refurbished ones have a 1 out of 3 percent chance of death or about 33%
There are always going to be problems with it because there just not made as well as Playstation 3′s. But I would highley recomend buying a intercooler fan for your 360. It can prevent some breakdowns. It will keep the 360 in good shape and will cause the 360 to be a little bit more reliable.
