My boyfriend recently sent off his xbox 360 to get it repaired. This is the second time they’ve sent it back with the red lights still coming on. The first guy he talked to said it may be the power source. It currently lights up orange, which I know means stand by, but nothing else happens. He told him to send that along with the xbox when he shipped it, yet another woman told him not to worry about it. The xbox is still messed up and the power still shows orange. We’re looking into buying an additional power source from ebay to see if that may be the problem. What’s the chances that xbox would send it back TWICE without it working? Do you think it could be the power source causing all the problems?
We sent the same xbox to them twice. Each time it has come back with the 3 red lights. Why couldn’t they have fixed it either time?
^^Sent it to Xbox^^ they sent the UPS box and we shipped it out. We did not use a random person to fix it.

  1. It’s not the power brick. It’s orange because the console isn’t working. You have overheated it and got the RROD (Red Rings of Death). I assume it’s 3 red rings?

I’m guessing you didn’t send it to MS but some random who pretended to know what he was talking about.
If it is unopened (pull off the front facia and check that the silver Microsoft label is pristine) then MS have extended their warranty to 3 yrs for the 3 red ring fault so send it to them.

Otherwise you can buy an ‘x-clamp fix kit’ from me for around £5-7 on ebay.co.uk (depending on where in the world you are). My kit is a collection of bolts and washers + thermal paste and full instructions on how to replace the x-clamps to fix the overheating issue and prevent it from returning.

  2. It’s entirely possible–without a properly functional power supply, the 360 can’t get the energy it needs to power up. The light on the power brick should be orange when the 360 is off (or if it’s plugged into the wall but not the console), but should turn green when you turn it on.

My best suggestion (since good ol’ Microsoft is giving you conflicting stories) is to find a friend who’s got a 360, and see if HIS power supply works with your console. If it does, then you know it’s a problem with yours–if it doesn’t, then you can safely assume that it’s the console. Hope this helps, good luck!

  3. The Power Brick light is orange because the XBOX is turned off so the Power Brick is standing by. It’ll turn green when the XBOX is on. It sound like it’s the Power Brick at fault as the 360 has already been repaired. The Power Brick probably isn’t providing enough power for the 360 to start, causing the Red Lights. Either ring MS or buy a new Power Brick
