My friend recently shut down his XBOX 360 while his brother was playing a game. When he attempted to turn said 360 back on he was faced with a blank screen and three red lights in the ring of light around the power button. If anyone knows of a way to fix it without sending it straight to the factory, would they plz tell me?

This happened to me yesterday.
Do NOT do the towel trick, it works but you overheat the system which melts some of the wiring and only works for a while before the problem comes back. It also voids your warranty.
If you only had the machine for a bit and are covered under a plan at the store you bought it – take it to them. If not call:
1-800-4MY-XBOX
I did this an hour ago and they will send you a prepaid box to send your machine back to them and they will give you refurbished one.
If you want to, you could try to fix it yourself. This website explains many things and some fixes: http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/Xbo...
I repair 360′s at work using a modified version of the "X-Clamp Fix", except with the correct sized screws and washers (to avoid drilling), and it worked fine. Still is working fine.
theres a really short term repair method called the towel trick as well. you wrap around towels over the xbox, turning it on so that the xbox overheats, reseting it’s chips. you get about a week without problems b4 doing the towel trick again
First off, DON’T DO THE TOWEL TRICK.
It wont work in this case, even thought it may work in others.
It’s just a temporary fix and may void the warranty meaning Microsoft wont fix your xbox 360 (in relation t answer above me)
The Graphics unit has overheated and melted the Video Card.
It’s useless and broken.
Send it off to Microsoft.
BTW, My xbox 360 had the exact same problem.
Here are the numbers to call.
USA: 1800-469-9269
Australia: 1800 555 741
Microsoft will fix it for free.
Just explain what happened.
